A SAMHSA sponsored webinar presented by the National Alliance on Mental Illness took place Wednesday, June 12, 2024 from 3:30-5:00pm Eastern Time titled “Connection in Crisis: The Impact of Peer Support”.
Description: A mental health crisis often feels lonely and isolating, for the individual in crisis, and it can be hard for them to imagine that anyone understands. In that critical moment, peer support specialists can provide compassion, hope, and needed support. Peer support specialists have lived experience, often with serious mental illness (SMI), and they are trained to deliver mental health support to other individuals with SMI. Engaging peer support specialists expands the options, approaches, and workforce available to people in crisis. Further, peers provide hope and establish connections to individuals in crisis. In this webinar, you’ll learn about the role peer support specialists play during a crisis, and how utilizing peer support connects people in crisis to more effective treatment options.
Speakers:
- Amy Watson, Ph.D., Professor at the School of Social Work at Wayne State University
