A SAMHSA sponsored webinar presented by the National Alliance on Mental Illness took place Wednesday, July 24, 2024 from 1:30-3:00pm Eastern Time titled “Next Steps in Peer Support Credentialing: What Else is Needed Now That We Have Guidance on National Model Standards from SAMHSA”.
Description: SAMHSA’s National Model Standards for Peer Support Certification were released in 2023. This was an important measure to harmonize the credentialing processes across states (where credentialing happens) and the interests to more widely recognize CPSSs’ professional competencies. One of the topics addressed in the standards is the supervision of CPSS and what supervisors need to know to be successful in their roles. This presentation focused on what the Model Standards address, and what else the behavioral health community must be attentive to provide the most effective peer support services to individuals. Also supporting the well-being of the behavioral health workforce, findings from NAMI surveys highlighted the importance of what is needed, above and beyond the standards, to ensure that CPSS get the understanding, acceptance, and support they need to do their jobs and navigate the various situations that they experience as part of that work.
